FSSC 22000 for Food Packaging and Packaging Materials
Make sure that your food packaging manufacturing processes meet customer requirements for safety and quality.
FSSC 22000 is a voluntary food safety management system standard that can be applied to organizations operating in various sectors of the food supply chain, including food packaging manufacturing. Sector specific requirements must be met by contractors and subcontractors for the FSSC 22000 standard to be applied to products.
A module of the standard provides specific requirements for packaging materials covering food, feed and animal food. Certification to FSSC 22000 demonstrates a commitment of packaging material manufacturers to adhere to its stringent food safety requirements.
What is FSSC 22000 for Production of Food Packaging and Packaging Materials?
FSSC 22000 provides a certification model that is used in the food manufacturing industry and the related supply chain to ensure food safety standards and processes. It is GFSI-recognised and follows the food chain category description as defined in ISO 22003-1:2022. The scope of the scheme is divided into categories, with the production of packaging materials being covered under Category I of the scheme.
All materials that come into contact with food products especially the product packaging, can influence product safety, both by failing to protect the product properly and through contamination. Certification only covers products made specifically for the food supply chain and does not apply to domestic variants of products such as aluminium foil or plastic film.
All types and sizes of businesses involved in food packaging and packaging materials manufacture can use the standard.
Benefits of becoming certified
Certification to FSSC 22000 sector specific requirements by an independent third-party verifies how your system is performing. Although European in origin, the standard is recognised globally by many brand owners, manufacturers and retailers when assessing the capabilities of their suppliers.
As a result of certification:
- You build trust in your products’ performance and your capability to meet the requirements of customers.
- Implement a structured approach to continually improving products to satisfy customer and statutory requirements.
- Gain a significant competitive advantage by meeting any packaging material certification requirements from customers, suppliers and sub-contractors seeking their own FSSC 22000 certification in order to conduct business with them.
